Week In Review – Week 4 -22/1/17 -28/1/17

Well, I did it!  I beat last weeks stat total of 33249 and hit a new weekly personal best of 40492, an average of 5785 steps a day.  I’m slowly easing myself back into the swing of things and while I’m still not where I want to be I’m glad that I am making a progress of sorts step wise and moving in the right direction!  I have spoken about having an appointment with the Dr on Friday in last weeks Week In Review post, and have a low functioning thyroid so have been prescribed Thyroxine which should help with my tiredness and energy levels – I started taking them yesterday so we will see how they help.

This week I am aiming to average around 7000 steps each day (I managed 2 days last week of nearly 8000 steps) which should be achievable!  I think that the evenings getting lighter will help me to achieve this as I can take Roxy out for a bit longer when I get home from work now as I seem to have more evening now that has started happening!

Week 7 Overview

I have been thinking about how I write this part of my blog and have decided on a change of format.  I will begin this section by giving my total weekly stats and a breakdown as to how I have achieved this then give a day to day total and what happened that day to cause me to either meet, or not, my target. So here goes!

Wednesday 12th  10289 steps.  I went for a walk at lunch time  for 24 mins and covered 1.02 miles, taking 2515 steps and then in the evening I took Roxy around the block for a walk for 45mins and covered 0.57 miles, Roxy seemed to want to stop and sniff at everything so I only took 1496 steps.  The rest of my steps were taken up with moving around in work and at home.

Thursday 13th 7159 steps.  I went out for a walk at lunch time for 29 mins and covered 1.13 miles taking 2751 steps.  In the evening I didn’t go out for a walk as I went to visit my parents and had tea with them.  The rest of my steps were made in work and at my parents when I was playing with the dogs!  I knew that I would be under target today as I am fairly sedentary when at my parents and am always under my target on visit days in general.

Friday 14th  7320 steps.  I went out at lunch time for a 39 minute walk and covered 0.98 miles and taking a total 2396 steps.  I then went home after work and did a load of housework (a normal thing on a Friday)  Most of my steps were taken in work and at home when cleaning and tidying up.  I didn’t take Roxy out for a walk as she got exercise playing in the garden while I was cleaning.  If I factor in the time I was cleaning and converted that time into steps I would have been over my target of 10,000 steps.

Saturday 15th 10849steps.  We went out for my Birthday trip to Westonbirt Arboretum and walked around for 201 minutes, covering 2.44 miles and taking a total 6457 steps.  The rest of my steps were made up by walking Roxy around the block.

Sunday 16th 8860 steps.  Today was my Birthday!  I made up my steps while out shopping and taking Roxy out for a 44 minute walk where I covered 1.68 miles and took 3929 steps.  Hitting my target today seemed to be really easy as I didn’t need to make a conscious effort to take any steps, the arboretum was a lovely place to go to walk and my attention was held elsewhere than my feet!

Monday 17th 5305 steps.  I had my flu jab on Friday and today I think I had a bit of a reaction to it, I felt tired, achy and a bit sick in general.  I didn’t manage to get out for my lunch time walk as I wasn’t really feeling up to it and when I got home all I seemed to have energy to do was sit on the sofa with Roxy and not do much.  I am pleased I managed to hit 5305 steps though as I was imagining it to be much lower!

Tuesday 18th 10404 steps.  Today I went out for a walk at lunch for 29 minutes covering 1.18 miles and a total 2859 steps then in the evening I went out for a walk with Roxy for 39 minutes covering 0.93 miles and taking 2553 steps.  The rest of my steps were made up by doing some housework and in work.

All in all I am happy with my stats for the week.  I have made a total of 60186 steps which has covered 23.6 miles (or 37.98 kms) and done 450 minutes of exercise which isn’t that bad considering I haven’t been feeling too well!

Week 5 Overview

This week’s stats run from the end of September where I was still undertaking my Walk All Over Cancer, 10000 Step A Day Challenge, 28th September to 4th October. In that time I took a total of 40997 steps, travelled a total of 23.6 miles or 37.98kms. I have had a few days where I have not hit 10,000 steps a day (Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday) but that was down to having a few days off post challenge and catching up with things I have missed out on during the challenge!

I have found that on the days where I have missed hitting 10,000 steps I have been really conscious that I wasn’t going to meet the target and did, at the end of the day, go to bed feeling a bit let down at myself, however I have substituted walking with housework and other things which I do not count towards my step goal.

This week coming I am going to try and hit 10,000 steps as often as I can but I know there will be days where this may not be possible, like when I go to visit my friends and family and it may not be suitable to walk there and back. I have started a lunch time walking routine with a friend and we now often go out at lunch time for a half hour walk around the estate. This has been really fun as we get to chat and have a catch up, I feel more positive when I return to my desk and more alert and I am hitting around 5,000 steps by 2pm. Hitting this target by the afternoon means that I have less steps to cover when I get home, and as the nights are drawing in and its getting darker sooner I don’t need to be out late to get to my goal, which means I am home and safe before darkness hits. All in all this is a winner for the winter months!

Now for yesterdays stats… Did I hit 10,000 steps?


I didn’t 😦 I got up and went to work, went for a walk at lunch and then went to my parents for tea.  I was actually surprised that I got to 5000 steps as I was not expecting to even clear 3500!

I thought it would be nice to answer some more questions that I have been asked since completing the Walk All Over Cancer, 10,000 step a day Challenge for Cancer Research including the most asked question”What Next?”

  • How do you feel now, after completing the challenge?

Completing this challenge is something I never thought would happen, especially in the last week where it seemed harder and harder to make 10,000 steps each day.  I am really proud of myself for persevering and seeing it through to the end.  There are health benefits that I am feeling too…I am feeling fitter and stronger than I have in a long time, I feel like I get out of breath less and that my mind is clearer.  I feel a lot calmer and more focused on what I m doing day to day, whether it be work, or things at home.  I have found I am sleeping better to.  So, all round I feel pretty great, I’m glad to have had the opportunity to take on this challenge, back a really important cause and be able to have taken advantage of health benefits that I didn’t really think about at the beginning of September!

  • What did getting to and crossing the last 10,000 steps feel like?

Before I headed out for my final walk to 10,000 steps on Friday I felt a bit sad that something was coming to an end, to have something in your life for a month is quite a big thing and for that to end made me feel quite deflated.  I also felt that I should be taking my final steps with my friends and family (though, in reality I should have organized this before the last day!)  I decided that I would pass the last 10,000 marker with my dog Roxy, after all, she had been there for each 10,000 step marker along the way, and what better way to close the challenge than with her?  I passed the last 10,000 steps on the cycle track at 7:02 pm.  I can’t quite describe how it felt, there was pride, a sense of amazement that I actually did it, elation and I couldn’t stop smiling!  Roxy and I actually did a little dance on the spot!  🙂

  • how did you mark the occasion?

I marked the occasion, right at that point in time by taking a selfie in the exact spot!  Later I treated myself to a hot shower and a bottle of white wine, a film and a snuggle on the sofa with Roxy and my other half!  The following day we went for food to celebrate too!

  • Are you going to keep walking and attempting to hit 10,000 steps a day?

I am going to try and keep up doing 10,000 steps, however I am not going to be pushing myself as hard as I did for September.  While I loved the challenge, I did find it hard going, there were days where I seemed to just be walking and walking.  I found that, in order to hit 10,000 steps I had to have a routine that was a bit unforgiving – getting home from work and going for an hour and half walks to get my steps in every night.  There didn’t seem to be space for all the other things I normally do, and I did feel that I had to cram a lot in to smaller amounts of time in order to achieve my day to day tasks.  I love walking, and I think its really good to have a target to hit but sometimes, its also good to have rest days.

  • Will you continue to blog and share your stats?

I am aiming to continue to blog and am currently putting together a plan of posts for 2017, these will be varied from reviews, question and answer sessions, sharing new walks, where I have walked, even recipe ideas.  I am aiming to continue to share my stats, whether that is weekly or daily though, I’m not sure (I haven’t really got that far planning wise!!!)  I do know I won’t be sharing them constantly to Instagram or my Facebook unless I do an amazing amount of steps!  I will just be sharing my stats here!

  • What next?

That’s a really good question, for now I am going to keep on walking, enjoying the outdoors, taking photos and blogging about walking!

2 Weeks In

Today marks 2 whole weeks since the start of this 10,000 step a day challenge for Cancer Research (Walk All Over Cancer) in that time (not including today as I’m still adding to those stats!)  I have covered 38.95 km’s (24.2 miles) and taken 73986 steps – thats an average of 12331 steps a day (for the last 6 days) and over 13986 steps more than I should have taken in 6 days!  I have been active continuoulsy (for my walks) for 216 mins (or 3.36hrs) which is less than last weeks active walking times.

I did have an off day, that was on monday when I wasnt feeling too well.  I have learned that it is ok, sometimes to have an off day and use it for rest and recouperation.  I feel that my day off wasn’t a complete failure, I managed to move 6773 steps, not bad considering I wasn’t feeling too good and stayed in for the evening.

Overall, I’m really happy with this weeks stats so far and can honestly say that I am really enjoying the challenge.  Thats not to say that I have found each day easy, there are times when I could quite happily come home from work and sit in front of the tv or curl up with a book and a coffee, but thats a challenge for you, if it was easy then it wouldn’t be a challenge would it?
